Omaha is divided into a number of geographically distinct sections, each of which includes a number of neighborhoods. Immediately west of Downtown Omaha is Midtown, an ethnically diverse and historically significant part of Omaha. In specifically for the city’s African American population, North Omaha is a community area north of downtown Omaha with a rich historical, architectural, and religious past. The term “South Omaha” refers to the area south of downtown Omaha that traditionally has been populated by Eastern European immigrants and, more recently, by Central and North American Hispanic immigrants. Its illustrious past is reflected in churches and other buildings. South Omaha, which used to be a distinct city including a section of this territory, was incorporated into Omaha in 1915.
